/   HPOS (High-Performance Order Storage)

What is HPOS in WooCommerce?

HPOS is WooCommerce’s modern order storage system: orders get dedicated database tables instead of sharing wp_posts, making large stores dramatically faster.

HPOS, High-Performance Order Storage, is WooCommerce’s redesigned way of storing orders in the database. Historically, orders lived in wp_posts, the same table as blog posts and pages, with details scattered across meta rows. HPOS gives orders purpose-built tables, which makes order queries, admin screens, and reporting dramatically faster on stores with meaningful volume.

New WooCommerce installations use HPOS by default. Established stores have to switch deliberately, and the switch has one real risk: older plugins and custom code that read orders the legacy way (direct database queries against wp_posts) stop seeing orders after the move. WooCommerce ships a compatibility mode that writes to both systems during transition exactly for this reason.

The practical guidance: stores past roughly 50,000 orders feel the upgrade immediately, and any store planning to scale should get compatible sooner rather than later. The migration sequence, compatibility audit, staging test, dual-write period, cutover, is well understood and safe when followed in order.
