ProductDock is a software development company. When they decided their website should be usable by everyone, they did the hard part properly: a full internal accessibility audit of the site against WCAG 2.1 AA, documented issue by issue, with severities and a fix brief. Then they brought in a partner to implement it, and the project came to us through Mineweb.
What the audit found
This was not a vague “make it accessible” request. It was a precise one. The audit identified 92 issues, graded by severity and mapped to the four WCAG principles:
By WCAG principle, the weight sat where it usually does: Perceivable (53 issues, things like missing alt text and weak color contrast), Operable (28 issues, keyboard traps and focus problems), Understandable (4 issues, unclear headings), and Robust (8 issues, markup that assistive technology could not parse). The goal was WCAG 2.1 AA, on desktop and mobile, for people with visual, auditory, physical, and cognitive disabilities.
What we remediated
We worked through the brief category by category, at the level of the code rather than an overlay widget:
- Keyboard navigation. Fixed the header sub-menu, made embedded videos and chat tools fully keyboard-operable, and eliminated the keyboard traps that locked users in when a video overlay opened
- Focus management. Preserved and directed focus when filters, carousels, and search inputs activated, so keyboard and screen-reader users never lost their place
- Forms. Corrected field labeling and fixed how errors are announced and where focus lands, so a form is completable without sight
- Color contrast. Raised text-to-background contrast to AA thresholds, with particular attention to smaller fonts
- Alt text and custom components. Added meaningful alt text to informative images, marked decorative images with empty alt, and gave custom UI elements proper ARIA labels and roles
- Headings and semantics. Reorganized the heading structure into a correct semantic order and made sure every piece of content is reachable and understandable to a screen reader
- Search and filtering. Made search inputs take clear focus and announced filtering behavior and state changes to assistive technology, instead of updating silently
How we worked
We ran it in phases, the way an audit this size should be run: the high and medium-severity issues first, since those are the ones that actually block someone, then the long tail of low-severity refinements, then a final accessibility pass to confirm the fixes held.
And we verified with the tools that tell the truth, not just an automated scanner: VoiceOver for the real screen-reader experience, Accessibility Insights for structured checks, and dedicated contrast checkers for the color work. Automated tools catch a fraction of WCAG. The rest you have to operate the site to find, which is exactly what we did.
The outcome
All 92 issues were remediated at the code level, across all four WCAG principles, on desktop and mobile. The site the client had audited against WCAG 2.1 AA now actually meets the standard it was measured against, and the people the audit was written for, keyboard-only users, screen-reader users, people who need real contrast, can use it.
Accessibility is one of the few areas of web work where “looks fine to me” is worthless. It either passes for the person relying on it or it does not. A client who audits their own site to this standard deserves an implementation held to the same one, and that is what we delivered.
