Local SEO for WordPress: the 2026 guide for businesses that sell to a city

Local search has its own results layout: the map pack (the three pinned businesses under the map) and then regular organic results. The map pack gets the calls. Winning it depends on three things Google has stated openly: relevance, distance, and prominence. Your WordPress site influences all three more than most owners realize.

1. Google Business Profile: the other half of your website

  • Claim and complete every field: categories (primary category matters most), services, hours, photos, attributes
  • Match your name, address, and phone exactly to your website footer, character for character
  • Post photos monthly, profiles with fresh photos measurably outperform stale ones
  • Answer the Q&A section before strangers answer it for you

Your GBP and your website reinforce each other: Google cross-references both, and inconsistency between them is the most common self-inflicted local ranking wound.

2. Location pages that aren’t cardboard

If you serve multiple cities, each needs its own page, and Google is good at spotting the copy-paste-swap-city-name version. A location page that ranks has real local substance: the address and embedded map (or defined service area), local phone number, staff and photos from that location, reviews from customers in that market, and answers to location-specific questions. One template, genuinely localized content. That’s the structure behind our own market pages, and behind the multi-location clients we rank.

3. LocalBusiness schema

Structured data tells Google exactly what your business is, where it is, and when it’s open, in the format Google parses natively. On WordPress: LocalBusiness (or the specific subtype: Dentist, Attorney, Restaurant) with name, address, geo coordinates, hours, and phone, per location. Validate in the Rich Results Test. It takes an hour and most of your local competitors haven’t done it.

4. Reviews: volume, velocity, and replies

Reviews are the strongest prominence signal and the strongest human signal at once. Three rules: ask every happy customer (a follow-up text with a direct link converts best), keep the flow steady rather than in bursts, and reply to every review, including the bad ones, because your reply is read by every future customer. Pull your Google reviews onto the site with schema so the stars work for you in both places.

5. Citations and consistency

Citations, mentions of your name, address, and phone on directories like Yelp, BBB, and industry-specific listings, still matter as consistency signals. You don’t need 200. You need the top 20 for your industry, correct and identical everywhere. An afternoon of cleanup beats a $99/month citation subscription.

6. The technical layer WordPress controls

  • Speed on mobile: local searches are overwhelmingly mobile, and the map pack favors pages that load. Core Web Vitals guide here.
  • Title tags with geo intent: ‘Emergency Plumber in Tampa, FL | CompanyName’ beats ‘Home | CompanyName’ every day of the week.
  • City in the H1 and content naturally, not stuffed into every sentence like a 2012 SEO wrote it.
  • Embedded map and driving directions on contact and location pages.
  • Local content: a few genuinely useful posts about your market (‘what Tampa homeowners should know about…’) build local topical relevance.

The mistakes that keep businesses invisible

  1. One generic page trying to rank for five cities at once
  2. NAP details that differ between site, GBP, and directories
  3. Zero reviews strategy: waiting for them instead of asking
  4. A fast desktop site that takes 9 seconds on the phones local searchers actually use
  5. Choosing the wrong primary GBP category and wondering why the map pack never comes

Local SEO compounds: every month of consistent signals makes the next month easier, and most local competitors are doing almost nothing. That’s the opportunity. A dental practice we built for did exactly this playbook and reached the top 3 map pack in both locations with 45% more appointments.
